It is officially the start of the book fair season. And in 10 days I will be on my way to the 47th Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair.
Not only will this be my first time in Boston, but it will also be my first time traveling for books! My personal dream for years now has been to have the ability to sell books for a living will traveling to different places across the world to acquire them.
To explain what I will be doing with my time in Boston, I am being sponsored by the ABAA (Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America) Diversity Initiative Discovery Program. So, my days will be filled with an intensive itinerary designed to help my peers and I have a strong hands-on introduction into the trade.
The fun part though is not only will I get to visit the fair, a few libraries, and bookstores. Most of my days end in the afternoon leaving me the night to explore Boston. So, I will have plenty of time to reflect on what I experience every day.
I hope that I can add fairs like this one to my yearly travels in pursuit of more knowledge and books. I hope every trip not only increases what I have to sell but also expands my knowledge of the trade! I will also be viewing different collections in hopes it inspires me on what I want to do for my first specialized catalog.
I want to get my first ever catalog out there within the next six months, on top of growing my own list of books to sell. Eventually I want to be able to specialize in books that are hand pressed and beautifully crafted. So, I'll be hunting out books with fore edge paintings whenever possible. I would be especially happy to find books with hidden fore edge paintings in the wild, that has been one of my earliest goals in the trade.
This is only the beginning.
